Director Julie Taymor, associate director John Stefaniuk, producer Thomas Schumacher and more discuss the incredible visual design of the screen-to-stage adaptation in the new featurette, part of the ongoing Road To Pride Rock series.
“It’s a tale that every culture, everybody understands – but how it’s told is very original,” Taymor astutely observes.
“Children and adults alike suspend their disbelief knowing that it is theatre – that we are not really in a savannah; that we are not really in a jungle – and they go with you,” Taymor assertively adds.
The Lion King musical plays at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.

The Lion King musical returned to San Francisco on November 01, 2012. The Lion King return engagement will continue at Orpheum Theatre – San Francisco through Sunday, January 13, 2013.
It’s one of the world’s most successful musicals. 65 million people from across the world have seen the Lion King stage show. More than 31 thousand have already packed into the Palace Theatre in Manchester since it opened a fortnight ago.
It includes all the favourites from the film including ‘Circle of Life’, ‘Can you feel the love Tonight’ and, of course, ‘Hakuna Matata’.

Lion King Behing The Scenes Video – Talk with Costumes Supervisor
Behind the curtain, Gregory Young supervises hundreds of costumes.
“Each actor has a number, and each costume has a letter so this would be the first costume that she’ll be wearing in the show.”
There are 250 costumes on stage every performance. There are 350 costumes in total. Each one is creative and unique down to the last detail.
“This one is one of my favorites when Simba and Nala reunite. It’s very green, and all of a sudden you have a burst of color, and it opens up like this.”
Most theaters are square in shape as is “The Lion King” production. So Century II’s circle was cause for planning way ahead of show time.
“The men are on the other side of what we call the crossover so they’re on stage left and we’re on stage right. We only have the women on this side so normally this would be double the length that it is now,” said Young.
Every three cast members have a person who helps them in and out of costumes all performance long.
“We are one step ahead, a scene ahead of each performer. So when they go away, they start setting the costume for the next scene.”

The Lion King Behind the scenes Makeup – Video
The hit Broadway musical “The Lion King” continues its run in Buffalo, NY for 4 more weeks.
Bridge Street’s Kaylea Nixon recently went backstage for an experience that left her “transformed.” In Disney’s “The Lion King,” Rafiki opens the show with her powerful voice. Backstage, all of Rafiki’s makeup is done nightly by makeup artist Valirie Anderson. Valirie has been with the show since 2008 and agreed to show off her skills by transforming Kaylea into the colorful character. The process usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
