June 2023 marks the debut of two new young Simbas in Broadway’s The Lion King. Starting Tuesday, June 6, Donovan Louis Bazemore and Davis Matthews will alternate as “Young Simba” alongside current cast members Ava Hailey Harris and Jillian Paige Platero as “Young Nala.” David Matthews will make his Broadway debut, while Bazemore previously performed in The Lion King show.

David Matthews is excited to make his Broadway debut! White Plains Performing Arts Center gave him his first performance opportunity when he was six years old. In New York, he has also performed at Sandbox Theater and Random Farms Kids Theater.

Julie Taymor, the first woman to win a Tony for Best Director of a Musical, is the show’s director, costume designer, and mask co-designer. She continues to be actively involved in the production, initiating new performances while also maintaining the main Broadway production.

Celebrating 25 landmark years on Broadway, The Lion King continues to ascend as one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Over the course of the show’s run, there have been 27 tours and international productions, seen by 112 million people and currently seen each week by 115,000 people across the world.

Oliver joins the Broadway company straight from the Madrid production of The Lion King, where he also played Zazu, making him the first Spanish musical theatre actor to perform the same leading role in both a Spanish and Broadway musical production. In celebration of Oliver’s bilingualism, for the first time in the history of the Broadway production, Spanish-language surprises will be incorporated into the show.

Having recently celebrated its 16th anniversary on Broadway last month, The Lion King finds itself in a position unprecedented in the history of Broadway. Already the highest-grossing show in Broadway history, the show is routinely the #1 Broadway show in a given week, a feat previously unimaginable for a show at this stage in its life.

The production recently became the first show in Broadway history to pass $1 billion in cumulative gross, an achievement made by the North American tour of The Lion King earlier this year.

Director Julie Taymor, associate director John Stefaniuk, producer Thomas Schumacher and more discuss the incredible visual design of the screen-to-stage adaptation in the new featurette, part of the ongoing Road To Pride Rock series.

“It’s a tale that every culture, everybody understands – but how it’s told is very original,” Taymor astutely observes.

“Children and adults alike suspend their disbelief knowing that it is theatre – that we are not really in a savannah; that we are not really in a jungle – and they go with you,” Taymor assertively adds.

The Lion King musical plays at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.
