Lion King’s 27th Broadway Anniversary – Surprise Appearance by Show’s Original Young Nala
Lion King Musival on Broadway Celebrates 27th Anniversary on November 13, 2024. And to mark the milestone, the cast surprised the crowd with Kajuana S. Marie, who created the role of Young Nala at the age of 10 when the show opened in 1997.
Broadway’s The Lion King roared onto the scene in 1997, just three years after the release of the animated classic. The Lion King officially opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on November 13, 1997, transferring to the Minskoff in 2006. Lion King Musical on Broadway is 27 years and counting.
Kajuana S. Marie held back tears in an emotional curtain call appearance on Nov. 13. “I absolutely was here the opening night of the show because I am actually the very first Young Nala,” Marie said, in video from the moment shared to The Lion King’s social media channel.
“A surreal moment,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories, reposting the video.

A 10-year-old claims the throne as Young Simba in The Lion King on Broadway
10-year-old Davis Matthews who first auditioned early this year for Lion King musical is now starring as Young Simba in ‘The Lion King’ on Broadway until December. Davis, who grew up in New Rochelle, has always enjoyed singing, acting, and dancing. Tabitha, his mother, is his motivation. She has appeared in numerous community theatres and is his acting tutor.
David Matthews will make his Broadway debut in The Lion King; he began performing at the age of six with White Plains Performing Arts Center and has since appeared at Sandbox Theater and Random Farms Kids Theater. Bazemore, a veteran of the The Lion King Touring and Broadway performances, has also appeared in regional productions of Ragtime, Rachel, and The Snow Day. The audience love new young Simba. Davis Matthews’ own circle of relatives love the pleasure it brings him and the message it sends to different children. “The feeling of just being so proud that he is living out his dream, living out his ancestor’s dream, and so many other kids that look up to you, who look just like you, and you’re able to say if I did it, you can do it too,” Tabitha Matthews said. This will be another milestone for The Lion King Broadway show.

Broadway’s The Lion King to introduce 2 New Young Simbas this June
June 2023 marks the debut of two new young Simbas in Broadway’s The Lion King. Starting Tuesday, June 6, Donovan Louis Bazemore and Davis Matthews will alternate as “Young Simba” alongside current cast members Ava Hailey Harris and Jillian Paige Platero as “Young Nala.” David Matthews will make his Broadway debut, while Bazemore previously performed in The Lion King show.
David Matthews is excited to make his Broadway debut! White Plains Performing Arts Center gave him his first performance opportunity when he was six years old. In New York, he has also performed at Sandbox Theater and Random Farms Kids Theater.
Julie Taymor, the first woman to win a Tony for Best Director of a Musical, is the show’s director, costume designer, and mask co-designer. She continues to be actively involved in the production, initiating new performances while also maintaining the main Broadway production.
Celebrating 25 landmark years on Broadway, The Lion King continues to ascend as one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Over the course of the show’s run, there have been 27 tours and international productions, seen by 112 million people and currently seen each week by 115,000 people across the world.

Esteban Oliver Joins Lion King on Broadway as ‘Zazu’
The Lion King musical, fourth longest-running show in Broadway history, welcomes Esteban Oliver as Zazu, starting Tuesday, April 1, 2014.
Oliver joins the Broadway company straight from the Madrid production of The Lion King, where he also played Zazu, making him the first Spanish musical theatre actor to perform the same leading role in both a Spanish and Broadway musical production. In celebration of Oliver’s bilingualism, for the first time in the history of the Broadway production, Spanish-language surprises will be incorporated into the show.
