Disney’s The Lion King Touring Production will reopen in October 2017
Disney Theatrical Productions announced that The Lion King North American tour will unveil a newly-configured production in October 2017, allowing the award-winning musical to entertain new audiences in cities and venues which previously couldn’t accommodate the show. The Tony Award-winning design team, led by director Julie Taymor, will re-create and refresh their original designs for the state-of-the-art production, which will be equal in size and scope to the current one.
The tour closed on July 23, 2017, during which time the production’s technical modifications will be implemented and perfected. The tour will reopen in October 2017 at Syracuse, NY and will play premiere engagements in numerous cities, including El Paso, TX; Eugene, OR; and Sarasota, FL, as well as return engagements in markets previously played.
“I remember clearly when The Lion King opened on Broadway, the comment we most heard was, ‘You’ll never be able to recreate the spectacle on tour,’” said Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical Productions, in a statement. “Yet, Julie Taymor and her team cracked it and found a way to deliver the Broadway experience on the road for the last 14 years. Now, that same group of artists has used their ingenuity to deliver the show to markets we never imagined we would be able to reach because of the show’s complexity. Bringing the exhilaration of musical theater to new audiences is our deepest passion.”
The musical tells the story of the epic adventures of a young lion cub named Simba as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role as king.
Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 23 global productions of Disney’s The Lion King have been seen by more than 85 million people. The Lion King’s worldwide gross exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or other entertainment title in box office history. The Lion King won six 1998 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical. The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from The Lion King animated film along with new songs by John and Rice.

The Lion King Musical Return to Montreal – August 19 to September 07, 2014
The Lion King Musical returned to Montreal QC Canada for extended engagement from August 19 to September 07, 2014. Montreal does not get a lot of Broadway musicals, especially those which stay more than a week. Three years ago Disney’s The Lion King came here for a month and sold out every performance at the Place des Arts.

“It’s a tall pole puppet in the I Just Can’t Wait to be King number,” explained Kendra Moore, an Edmonton-born member of the touring cast from 2003-2008 who now acts as tour dance captain, teaching various roles to newcomers and filling in for dancers who are indisposed. “I remember the first time I did it. I couldn’t believe that the girls were doing it and not the men. The pole fits into a pole belt. The pole is quite heavy and you have to bend with it to balance it correctly. You can hurt your back if you don’t hold it properly. Some dancers have dropped it. One time, my pole belt broke, which has happened to others, too.”
Moore’s favourite role among the 11 Lion King roles that she teaches and can perform is the Cheetah.
“The Cheetah stands out on stage in the opening number,” she said in an interview from Washington, D.C. “It’s such a beautiful puppet. It’s fun to do, too. When I get into that puppet, I think about what a cheetah looks like and how it feels to move like a cheetah. I really try to become a cheetah!”
It’s unlikely that Moore was thinking in cheetah terms as a member of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal for three years in the 1990s when the company was led by Yvan Michaud. For an Alberta-born and trained dancer in her 20s, the tours with Les Ballets Jazz were memorable experiences.
“The company was small, only 12 dancers. We could fit in all kinds of theatres. I got to go to places — like China — I never would have imagined.”

Lion King Musical Tour in Charlotte NC was a Sold-Out Engagement
The Lion King tour in Charlotte (August 06 to September 01, 2013) was a sold-out four week engagement. Lion King broke the Belk Theater’s box office record for highest-grossing week when it grossed $1,399,576 for the week ending September 1, 2013. It grossed over $5.5 million at the box office and entertained more than 63,000 patrons.
This was The Lion King’s third sold-out engagement in Charlotte, following a five-week premiere in 2003, and a six-week return in 2007 at the Belk Theater.
“The Lion King has once again taken Charlotte by storm during its four-week run, and the response we’ve seen from both audiences and the community has been exciting,” said Tom Gabbard, Blumenthal Performing Arts President. “We especially want to thank our friends at Disney Theatrical Productions and The Lion King for their help in returning this amazing production to Charlotte. They truly represent the ‘best of Broadway’ that we strive to deliver each season, and we can’t wait to have them back again.”
