PostHeaderIcon Lion King’s Mufasa, Alton Fitzgerald White Shows Off His Kingly Quarters

The Lion King’s Alton Fitzgerald White Shows Off His Kingly Quarters:

White invited Broadway.com to his backstage digs to show off some of his prized possessions.

The Lion King’s Mufasa, Alton Fitzgerald White oversees the entirety of Pride Rock’s animal population. White’s kingly instincts have filtered into his dressing room at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where he’s taken control to ensure everything is just right. “This is called Citrus Orange,” he says of the brightly colored painted walls. “It’s happy, light, not too shocking, but still warm.” Another perk of being king? “I have a window. Not many dressing rooms of Broadway shows have windows.”

“There’s nothing like fresh cut flowers in a dressing room. During the winter time, I tend to do Paperwhites and Amaryllis, but in the summer I love Orchids. They smell good and have nice, long lives.”

“I’m inspired by all kinds of music, so it’s important to be surrounded by sound. I have my iPod and pump up my speakers and try to do some sit-ups and stretches to get the blood flowing. Music always helps with that.”

“I’m not in much of the second act, so I keep my computer around to catch up on e-mails, Facebook and fun things like that during my down time.”

“It’s important to me that the room always smells good so I always have some kind of reed diffuser around. I like something that’s kind of woodsy and not too abrasive. This one is from West Elm and is called Incense Spirit. It lasts really long.”

“This is my favorite coffee mug, which I’ve had for years. Coffee always helps, especially on a two-show day, when you need that extra kick. The mug has a really odd shape, so it’s a conversation starter. It’s short and wide and looks like it’s been handspun, but it holds just as much as a tall mug.”

PostHeaderIcon Lion King to Become Seventh Longest Running Show with 5,462 Performances

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, All the Lion King Fans

Disney’s The Lion King, which currently plays the Minskoff Theatre, will become the seventh-longest running musical in Broadway history when it plays its 5,462nd performance Jan. 2, 2011.

On that date the musical will surpass Disney’s inaugural Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast.

“It’s enormously gratifying to the whole creative team to see our show move up this rarefied list,” stated Thomas Schumacher, producer and president, Disney Theatrical Productions. “The Lion King’s continued success is a testament first to Julie Taymor’s original vision, which continues to astonish, and to the men and women onstage and off who create the magic each night. Thanks to them, performance 5,462 is as powerful as opening night.”

As of Jan. 2, the list of the top ten longest-running Broadway shows will be as follows (bolded titles with asterisk denote productions currently running):

The Phantom of the Opera* (9,539)
Cats (7,485)
Les Miserables (6,680)
A Chorus Line (6,137)
Oh! Calcutta (5,959)
Chicago* (5,868)
The Lion King* (5,462)
Beauty and the Beast (5,461)
Rent (5,123)
Miss Saigon (4,092)

The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from “The Lion King” animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King sales a roaring success in Schenectady, NY

Lion King will be visiting Schenectady’s Proctors Theatre from Tuesday, February 22, 2011 and performing through Sunday, March 20, 2011 with 32 performances.

Tickets are selling so fast for The Lion King at Proctors in Schenectady that it is a safe bet every show will sell out, which would be a first for a monthlong-run production at the historic theater.

Proctors CEO Philip Morris said slightly more than 75 percent of the seats have been sold since tickets went on sale to the public Nov. 14.

Hundreds showed up the first day, with some camping out overnight to score seats. Prices range from $20 to $80, but can be as high as $130 for special premium packages.

Morris knew the show would be popular, but said the sales pace is faster than expected. “With two months left before the show I can’t imagine it not selling out,” Morris said.

Morris expects Proctors will turn a profit on “The Lion King” based on a complicated formula that includes individual and group ticket sales, fees and weekly rent.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King Box Office Record at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre

Once again, Disney’s “The Lion King” reigns at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre.

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday week, the long-running production shattered the Minskoff’s previous box office record by earning $1,870,145 during the eight sold out performances held during Thanksgiving week, November 22-28. That record significantly tops the previous one, also held by The Lion King, which was set for the week ending January 3, 2010, by more than $130,000.

And the beloved production shows no signs of slowing down. Now in its fourteenth season on Broadway, The Lion King had its highest-grossing fiscal year ever last year – unprecedented in a show that’s been around for as long as this.

The Lion King continues to draw crowds all over the world. Currently playing in six locations across the globe, it is the eight longest-running musical in Broadway history, and has been seen by over 54 million people worldwide since it premiered in 1997.
