Disney’s The Lion King musical celebrated its 25th anniversary in London’s West End this past weekend with a special gala performance on Sunday, after first opening its doors at the Lyceum Theatre on Oct. 19, 1999. Saturday 19 October 2024 saw the show reach its 25th birthday, having entertained over 19 million people during the past 25 years at the West End’s Lyceum Theatre.

Based on Disney’s 1994 animation film, the stage adaptation, which has played in theatres around the world, has been seen in the British capital by over 19 million theatregoers.

To mark the occasion, a special gala performance of The Lion King took place yesterday, Sunday 20 October 2024, at London’s Lyceum Theatre.

Taymor was part of the team that created the original stage show, which after opening in the U.S. in 1997 won six Tony Awards including best direction and costume design for Taymor.

Set visually against the backdrop of the Serengeti plain in Africa, the musical incorporates characters and puppets from around the world and includes five African languages.

The current cast of the show includes George Asprey as Scar and Shaun Escoffery as Mufasa, with both actors appearing in the show for the last 16 years. The cast also includes Thenjiwe Thendiva Nofemele as Rafiki, Gary Jordan as Zazu, Alan McHale as Timon, Mark Roper as Pumbaa, Owen Chaponda as Simba, Merryl Ansah as Nala, Meloné M’kenzy as Shenzi, Jorell Coiffic-Kamall as Banzai, and Mark Tatham as Ed.

Disney’s The Lion King Toronto Sit-Down Production is welcoming new cast members. The cast of 51 actors – 41 from Canada and 10 from South Africa, will begin rehearsals in Toronto on September 9, 2024. Performances will begin at the Princess of Wales Theatre on November 2, 2024.
