PostHeaderIcon Lion King’s impact – $15M for Schenectady NY

Disney’s The Lion King was good for Proctors and downtown Schenectady, according to new figures from the theater.

The 77,000 people who attended the performances — there were 32 in all — spent $5.2 million at Proctors’ box office, and generated another $15 million in economic benefits to Schenectady from spending at hotels, restaurants and other businesses. Proctors said the second figure is based on a Touring Broadway League report that says impact typically is about three times ticket sales.

The Lion King has since moved on to Rochester, N.Y. Lion King is performing at Rochester Auditorium Theatre (885 E. Main St.) in Rochester, NY for a limited 4 weeks, from March 22 to April 17, 2011. After that, the show goes to Toronto, Dayton, Ottawa and Montreal.

PostHeaderIcon Alphonso Romero Jones II who plays Simba in ‘Lion King’ wins Young Artists Award

Alphonso Romero Jones II won the award for “Best Performance in Live Theater” for his portrayal of young Simba in Disney’s Broadway production of “The Lion King,”; in the 32nd Annual Young Artist Awards, held at the Empire Ballroom of the Sportsmen’s Lodge Hotel in Studio City, Calif., last sunday night.

Jones bested other nominees Quinton Lopez of “Sick,” Adam Riegler of “The Addams Family,” and Marquis Kofi Rodriguez, who portrayed Simba in “The Lion King” before Jones got the role, at the awards ceremony, best described as the Oscars for young performers.

According to mom Kathy Jones, Alphonso was so excited he texted home right away.

“I got a text from him that said, ‘Mommy, I won. Yaaaaaaaaaaaay! Thank you Jesus,’” she said. “Then I texted him back, ‘Good job, baby!’”

Alphonso, a 12-year-old straight-A student in the sixth grade at P.J. Hill Elementary School, has been in the show since October 2009. His Broadway run will come to an end on Easter Sunday.

PostHeaderIcon The Lion King’s Young Simba is nominated for Young Artist Award

Alphonso Romero Jones II, Trenton native is nominated for Young Artist Award for his role as the young Simba in “The Lion King,” which is based on the Disney movie of the same name.
Alphonso Romero Jones II plays Simba The Lion King Broadway, has been nominated at the Young Performers Awards for "Best Performance in Live Theater."
Since October 2009, Jones has basked in Broadway’s glow as the star of “The Lion King.” The young star is up for “Best Performance in Live Theater” in the 32nd Annual Young Artist Awards. The ceremony will be held at the Empire Ballroom of the Sportsmen’s Lodge Hotel in Studio City, Calif., on Sunday.

“I didn’t even know about it until my mom was searching on the internet and found out I was nominated,” said Jones, a 12-year-old sixth-grade student at P.J. Hill Elementary School in Trenton. “I have no words, it’s really amazing.”

Also nominated for the award are Quinton Lopez of “Sick”; Adam Riegler, “The Addams Family”; and Marquis Kofi Rodriguez, who portrayed Simba in “The Lion King” before Jones got the role.

The nominees at the ceremony, best described as an Oscar-type celebration of young performers, reads like a who’s who of popular film and television celebrities. Jones, who will rub shoulders with them all, is no small potato himself. During his Broadway run, which will conclude on Easter Sunday, he held court with singer Rhianna and film star Matt Damon.

Since Jones’ contract is coming to a conclusion due to his age, the young actor said he is excited to see what the future has in store for him.

“I want to do television, voiceovers and movies,” he said. “I would like to do animated voiceovers. That’s what I really want to do.”

Until then, he will maintain his schedule of splitting his time between train rides to New York City and his studies at P.J. Hill, where he maintains a straight-A average. “It’s hard,” he said. “But you got to do what you got to do if you want to do what you want.”

PostHeaderIcon Lion King Visiting Schenectady, about to Roar in Proctors

Lion King will be Visiting Schenectady’s Proctors Theatre from February 22, 2011.

CEO Philip Morris predicted in December that “The Lion King” would sell out Proctors in Schenectady NY —a first for a month-long run at the theater. Now, with less than two weeks to go before the curtain rises on the Disney spectacular, Morris is not backing away from his prediction even though about 5,000 seats are still available.

The Lion King opens its 32-show run in Proctors Theatre on February 22, 2011 and Perform thru March 20, 2011.

The show should be a good antidote to the winter doldrums for downtown restaurants and other businesses.

Still, the term “sellout” isn’t always what it seems in the theater world, which seems appropriate for an industry built on illusion.

Because of obstructions in the extravagant show, Proctors cannot sell every seat in the house. Some seats are also held back in case of a last-minute problem, like a seat breaking after a matinee.

All told, Morris said there are 80,100 seats for “Lion King” over the course of 32 shows (were it not for obstructions and reserves, 84,544 seats would be available).

Even if not all 80,100 seats get snapped up, Morris said it would still be considered a “sellout” in the theater industry if Proctors comes within a percentage point of the total.

Stage hands have been busy stripping the historic theater of hanging lights and screens to prepare for the show. Trucks carrying props and other equipment are expected to roll into town on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Lion King is coming to the Durham Performing Arts Center tonight. The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Lion King returns to Durham NC at 7:30 tonight and continues through January 30, 2011.

Lion King roars into Durham Performing Arts Center

The Lion King is in its 13th year and has toured around the world, including Asia. Its broad appeal and longevity come from its classic story of personal growth and family strife, along with its diverse batch of dance styles, said Garth Fagan, who created the original choreography for the show.

Much of the show’s draw is its unconventional use of puppets and masks. The props are so seamlessly integrated with the actors, it’s easy to forget there are people behind them.

Tony Freeman plays the role of the hornbill Zazu, the lion Mufasa’s snooty aide. Freeman becomes the bird through a puppet extended on his arm, which he controls through three strings and a Slinky in Zazu’s neck. He has been playing the role for more than six years on Broadway and with the touring company.

The Lion King is expected to draw more than 75,000 people, as did “Wicked” and “Billy Elliot,” said Rachel Gragg, director of public relations for Durham Performing Arts Center. The center is counting on more than 40 percent of the audiences to come from Wake County.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King sales a roaring success in Schenectady, NY

Lion King will be visiting Schenectady’s Proctors Theatre from Tuesday, February 22, 2011 and performing through Sunday, March 20, 2011 with 32 performances.

Tickets are selling so fast for The Lion King at Proctors in Schenectady that it is a safe bet every show will sell out, which would be a first for a monthlong-run production at the historic theater.

Proctors CEO Philip Morris said slightly more than 75 percent of the seats have been sold since tickets went on sale to the public Nov. 14.

Hundreds showed up the first day, with some camping out overnight to score seats. Prices range from $20 to $80, but can be as high as $130 for special premium packages.

Morris knew the show would be popular, but said the sales pace is faster than expected. “With two months left before the show I can’t imagine it not selling out,” Morris said.

Morris expects Proctors will turn a profit on “The Lion King” based on a complicated formula that includes individual and group ticket sales, fees and weekly rent.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King returns to Chrysler Hall on Nov 30, 2010 for Five Weeks

Lion King returns to Chrysler Hall on Tuesday Nov 30, 2010 and will remain for five weeks, until Jan 02 2011. A run that long would once have been considered a risk. That was before the cub-turned-king helped establish Norfolk as a major theatrical market.

In the dead of night sometime this weekend, 18 tractor-trailers will plow through the streets of Norfolk headed for Chrysler Hall. They will carry 39 hyenas, 52 wildebeests, several giraffes, gazelles, zebras, antelopes, an elephant and one particular lion.

When the curtain at Chrysler Hall last dropped on “The Lion King” in January 2006, the show had set a local record by grossing $6.5 million. It sold more than 98 percent of its seats for a 45-performance run. The city reaped more than half a million dollars in admission taxes and parking revenues.

In the United States, Norfolk is one of three places where it will play next week. The other productions are on Broadway and in Las Vegas.

Chrysler Hall is undergoing a small renovation for the event. To stage the show’s opening, the entrance of an African menagerie, 97 seats were removed to create center aisles. Thirty-three additional seats were removed to house the massive sound and lighting equipment. The theater will return to its original state after Jan. 2.

Schumacher and his co-producer, Peter Schneider, have been involved with “The Lion King” for more than 20 years, since before it became the hit movie that turned into a stage phenomenon.

Lion King Musical show comes to Norfolk on Tuesday for the first time in five years. Lion King will take the stage Tuesday 30 November, 2010. Hope it will roar as loudly as it did five years ago. Get your Lion King Chrysler Hall Norfolk Tickets Online.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King musical’s 7,000th Performance

The musical ‘‘The Lion King’’ of Shiki Theatrical Co held its 7,000th performance in Tokyo on Sunday, attaining the mark in 11 years and nine months of performances in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.

‘‘I thank you from the bottom of my heart, representing all the animals and plants in the savanna,’’ actor Akihiko Fukamizu, who plays the villain lion ‘‘Scar,’’ told the audience in the curtain call.

The record of a 7,000-mark attained in 11 years and nine months is the shortest among theatrical plays in Japan, according to Shiki, which has performed the musical since 1998 in cooperation with Disney.
