Center president Terry Dwyer was beaming as Segerstrom Hall filled with expectant adults and kids for Friday’s performance of Disney’s perennially popular show, which plays there through June 13.

It’s easy to understand his happiness. Like every temple of culture around the nation, OCPAC has seen its share of paltry ticket sales and empty seats over the last 18 months or so. Broadway seasons help performing arts centers power through such droughts, and shows like “The Lion King” are their crown jewels.

Happily, “The Lion King,” in addition to its undisputed status as one of musical theater’s monster money makers, is also grandly entertaining, and in a way that other warhorses such as “Miss Saigon” and “The Phantom of the Opera” aren’t. Those musicals are intended for adult audiences. “The Lion King” is family fare, though like so many Disney stories since “Bambi” it comes with a caveat: death in the family.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King Breaks Box Office Records In Madison

Disney’s Lion King set new box office records in Madison during each week of its four-week premiere engagement which concluded on Sunday, May 23. The Lion King is the highest grossing theatrical production to ever play Overture Center for the Arts where it grossed over $4.8 million and entertained more than 68,000 people.

Making a major economic impact on the city, The Lion King drew thousands of first-time theatergoers and many travelers from more than 100 miles away to see the show. The Tony(r)-Award Winning Musical generated a $15 million economic benefit to the Capital City from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff.

“Lion King was everything we hoped for, and more,” said Overture Center president and CEO Tom Carto. “The energy in the building has been just incredible. We’ve seen a real spike in subscriptions for next season already, and I’m sure a good number of those new subscribers are people who had a great experience at The Lion King. We have a ripple effect through the downtown business community all year round, but this has been an especially big boost, which is good for everyone.”

“We are so proud to have shared the experience of this groundbreaking production with audiences in Madison, and to have entertained so many first-time and regular theatergoers,” said Jack Eldon, Vice President, Domestic Touring, Disney Theatrical Productions. “It is incredible to reflect that in our eighth year of touring this theatrical phenomenon, we are still breaking box office records and visiting new cities throughout North America. We are looking forward to continued success in the coming years.”

The North American touring production of The Lion King has been seen by over 12 million theatergoers and grossed over $775 million to date. The tour is one of seven productions running worldwide, along with New York City, London, Hamburg, Paris, Tokyo and Las Vegas.

Having already played 60 cities across North America, The Lion King continues to entertain audiences in new cities. The production begins performances in Costa Mesa at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, May 26 and plays through Sunday, June 13, 2010. During

PostHeaderIcon ‘The Lion King’ reigns over Madison

Long-running Broadway musical based on beloved Disney film heading to Overture Center, Madison WI.

Upon its release in 1994, “The Lion King” was an instant success, captivating audiences worldwide with its stirring story and award-winning music on the way to becoming the highest grossing traditionally animated film of all time — a title the film still holds. Three years later, “The Lion King” extended its kingdom to Broadway where it went on to win six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. More than 5,000 shows later (and counting), the eighth longest-running show in Broadway history will continue its reign in Madison, where the musical will rule the Overture Center for nearly a month starting from Tue Apr 27, 2010. Click here for the complete Lion King Tour Dates.

For those worried the Overture Center production won’t live up to such high expectations: Two words, “Hakuna Matata.” Although this is the first time “The Lion King” has come to Madison, audiences can rest assured the national tour not only stays true from city to city, but also matches up to the Broadway production.

“I’ve been on several national tours, and this production looks remarkably like its Broadway counterpart. Often, tours pall in resemblance to what’s showing on Broadway by the very nature of travelling. But they’ve figured out stuff for this show that I’m really proud of. It’s going into its eighth year and it still looks remarkably like the Broadway show,” said Klaisner, who has worked the past five “Lion King” national tours in addition to stints with popular musicals like “Show Boat,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Hair.”

Although the national tour looks the same onstage, it does have some differences behind the scenes from the Broadway production. The most noticeable change is the musical’s iconic Pride Rock, a colossal set piece with a life of its own.

“On Broadway and in the Las Vegas production, the rock is on an elevator and comes up through the stage floor. We obviously can’t do that as we go from venue to venue,” Klaisner said. “So what we have is a rock that is like a big wireless toy with a massive amount of computer technology that weighs about 5,000 pounds. It’s quite an incredible piece of work.”

“The Lion King” opens Tuesday, April 27 at the Overture Center and runs through Sunday, May 23. Buy Lion King Overture Center Madison Tickets now and save $20 on your next order over $250.
