Center president Terry Dwyer was beaming as Segerstrom Hall filled with expectant adults and kids for Friday’s performance of Disney’s perennially popular show, which plays there through June 13.
It’s easy to understand his happiness. Like every temple of culture around the nation, OCPAC has seen its share of paltry ticket sales and empty seats over the last 18 months or so. Broadway seasons help performing arts centers power through such droughts, and shows like “The Lion King” are their crown jewels.
Happily, “The Lion King,” in addition to its undisputed status as one of musical theater’s monster money makers, is also grandly entertaining, and in a way that other warhorses such as “Miss Saigon” and “The Phantom of the Opera” aren’t. Those musicals are intended for adult audiences. “The Lion King” is family fare, though like so many Disney stories since “Bambi” it comes with a caveat: death in the family.

Casting For Disney’s The Lion King
Broadway’s Award-Winning Best Musical Lion King Casting has been announced for the Orange County Performing Arts Center engagement of Disney’s The Lion King. Orange County’s most eagerly awaited return of the stage production will leap onto the Segerstrom Hall stage for three weeks.
This engagement is currently one of seven productions running worldwide along with New York, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Paris and Las Vegas.

Lion King Coming to OCPAC, Costa Mesa, CA 5/26 – 6/13
Disney’s The Lion King will be coming to Costa Mesa, CA in May 26 to June 13, 2010.
Casting has been announced for the Orange County Performing Arts Center engagement of Disney’s The Lion King. This engagement is currently one of seven productions running worldwide along with New York, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Paris and Las Vegas.
The Lion King continues to reign as one of the most popular shows on Broadway and around the world. Now in its 13th year, The Lion King is the eighth longest-running musical in Broadway history and the first American musical to welcome 50 million guests worldwide. The global phenomenon is the winner of more than 70 major awards worldwide, including the 1998 Tony Award® and NY Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, the 1999 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album, and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.
The cast includes some previous Broadway cast members. Tony Freeman who will reprise the role of “Zazu,” Ben Lipitz reprising the role of Pumbaa,” and Jerome Stephens, Jr. who reprises the role of “Young Simba” which he alternates.
The rest of the cast are Brent Harris as “Scar,” Dionne Randolph as “Mufasa,” Phindile Mkhize as “Rafiki,” Tyler Murree as “Timon,” Marja Harmon as “Nala,” André Jackson as “Simba,” Omari Tau as “Banzai,” Andrea Jones as “Shenzi,” Ben Rosenberry as “Ed,” Elijah Johnson who alternates “Young Simba” with Stephens, and Jamariana Tribble and Madai Monica Williams who will alternate “Young Nala.”
The Lion King will play Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM, Sunday evenings at 6:30 PM, Saturday matinees at 2 PM and Sunday matinees at 1 PM and a Thursday matinee on May 27 at 2 PM.
