The Lion King Musical Comes to Houston Starting July 10
The Lion King Musical will come to Houston, Texas Starting Tuesday July 10, 2012. Casting has been announced for the Houston engagement. The Lion King performances at Sarofim Hall – Hobby Center will continue through Sunday, August 12.
The Lion King’s eight-week Houston premiere engagement in 2002 was a big hit with the Sold-Out performances. Similarly at the Hobby Center was a sold-out six-week engagement in 2006.
Lion King Houston Cast Update:
The sardonic and deviously cunning “Scar” is played by Brent Harris. Dionne Randolph is “Mufasa,” the great warrior and ruler of the Pridelands. Buyi Zama is the wise baboon shaman “Rafiki.” Mark David Kaplan portrays the prim and proper hornbilled bird “Zazu.” Adam Kozlowski is the carefree warthog “Pumbaa” and Nick Cordileone is the wisecracking meerkat “Timon.” Mufasa’s son, “Simba,” the lion prince born to be king, is played by Jelani Remy and Nokubonga Khuzwayo is the loyal lioness “Nala.”
The three evil hyenas are played by Keith Bennett (“Banzai”), Rashada Dawan (“Shenzi”) and Houstonian Robbie Swift (“Ed”). The role of “Young Simba” is alternated between Zavion J. Hill and Adante Power and the role of “Young Nala” is alternated between Sade Phillip-Demorcy and Kailah McFadden.

The popular family musical, which had a record run here in 2007, headlines OPA’s Broadway season for 2012-13. Lion King musical will return to the Orpheum Theater for a four-week run from March 12, 2013 to Sunday, April 7, 2013.
The Lion King broke box office records when it first came to Omaha in 2007. “The Lion King” is a universal tale with a Disney treatment. A jealous uncle tricks a young cub into believing he’s killed his father. The cub flees into exile, abandoning his identity as the future king. Meanwhile, the uncle temporarily conquers the Pride Lands, ravaging the land in the process. Ultimately, the cub finds his rightful place.
Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, this blockbuster opened on Broadway in October 1997 and is still playing. It set records in Omaha in early 2007 during a four-week run. Music is by Elton John, with lyrics by Tim Rice. The show won six Tonys, including best musical.

The Lion King Coming to Wichita in September 2012, Tickets On Sale
The Lion King Musical coming to Wichita for a four week limited engagement, The performances at Century II Convention Center start with the 7:30 PM show on September 4, 2012 and continue through Sunday September 30, 201.
Officials announced in February 2011 that Theater League — the organization that brought 2009’s run of “Wicked” to Wichita for a three-week run — would be bringing “Lion King” to town for a similar extended run. “Wicked” offered Wichita audiences 24 performances. “Lion King” has 32 scheduled, said Bethany Nesbitt, Theater League’s marketing/communications account manager.
On May 5, individual tickets will go on sale at 8 a.m. in what will be a party atmosphere of radio-station DJs, giveaways and breakfast at Century II. Creating a buzz around the sale of individual tickets on May 5 at Century II will be radio remotes by DJs from Clear Channel radio stations B-98 FM, Kissin’ 102.1-FM and Channel 963 from 7 to 11 a.m. The first person in line will receive an autographed copy of “How Does the Show Go On?” by “Lion King” producer Thomas Schumacher. The first 100 ticket-buyers will receive a “Lion King” CD. While supplies last, other ticket-buyers on the scene will receive a “Lion King” T-shirt (one per order).
The Disney production of “The Lion King” — known for its elaborate costuming and lively music — has played in more than 70 cities in North America and been seen by more than 13.9 million people. The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the 1994 animated film — including the beloved songs “The Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” — along with three new songs by them and other music that fuses Western popular music with the sounds and rhythms of Africa.

Lion King Musical at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre – Review
Lion King is currently performing on tour in Orlando FL at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. The show opens April 19 at 8 p.m. and will run for four weeks through May 13.
Lion King musical plays at The Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m.; Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 1 p.m. There will be a 2:00pm matinee performance on Thursday, May 10 and there will not be a 6:30pm performance on Sunday, May 13.
“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring The Lion King back to Orlando,” said Ron Legler, President and CEO of Florida Theatrical Association. “Thus far sales have exceeded our expectations, but there are still great seats available.”

The touring version, at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre for nearly a month, certainly delivers all the goods that have made the story of Simba the lion a raging success.
The animated Disney film, on which the musical is based, handled the mix of grownup themes and kiddie fare with aplomb; the stage version isn’t always as successful. It can’t help but be jarring when against a backdrop of exquisitely designed costumes, flowing dance moves and that hypnotic African chanting to suddenly have a squawking bird crack a one-liner. (Though it must be pointed out that Mark David Kaplan, as the bird Zazu, expertly squawks and sputters like a classic Vaudevillian ham.)
The other principal comic players — Nick Cordileone and Adam Kozlowski as Timon and Pumbaa, the trio portraying hyenas — embody the personas of their animated predecessors.
It’s up to the dramatic actors to add some flesh and blood to the cartoon characters, and they succeed admirably.
J. Anthony Crane’s Scar is appropriately melodramatic and imposing, though his growly shouting buries some of Scar’s jokier lines and he talk-sings too much of his signature “Be Prepared,” giving the unsettling melody short shrift.
Dionne Randolph is a less grave, more energetic Mufasa than some — which makes his worries over parenting Simba and untimely death more poignant. Jelani Remi and Syndee Winters as adult Simba and his gal Nala also have youthful singing voices, which enhance their characterizations.
Perhaps the younger sounds help bring a freshness to the show, which avoids feeling mechanical even after all these years. Certainly adding to the exuberance factor: Adante Power, whose Young Simba is a whirlwind of personality with a dynamite grin.
And irrepressible Buyi Zama manages the tricky feat of being both grave and hysterical simultaneously as wise old Rafiki.

Lion King Broadway Box Office – Update for Week April 08, 2012
Lion King Broadway grossed $2,081,189 and had a 100.0% attendance rate, same as that of the previous week. The 39 shows on the boards grossed $27,986,522, about 14.90% more than that of the previous week’s totals.
The start of April school vacations, family and tourist demand resulted in a big hit for the Broadway shows. As a result several of the shows – “Wicked,” “The Lion King,” “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” and “The Book of Mormon” – brought in huge sums per person on average, according to weekly box office data published on Monday. Wicked, Lion King and The Book Of Mormon grosses crossed $2 million sales last week.
Over all, Broadway musicals and plays grossed $28 million last week, compared to $23.8 million a week earlier and $22.1 million for the comparable week last season.

Hundreds lined up before the sun even rose. Hundreds filled Popejoy Hall’s lobby early Saturday morning, all looking to score the best tickets available. When the sales counter finally opened at 7 a.m., fans were ready. Zach Lascari waited 12 hours for his seats. With a blanket and pillows, he parked himself in Popejoy Hall at 7 p.m. Friday night. “Yeah, I tried to sleep but I wasn’t successful,” he said. Turns out though, his patience paid off. Not only was he the first one in line, he also got a memento. A staff member handed him a Lion King book and said, “We do have a present for you from The Lion King. I think you’ll enjoy this. It’s a great book about the show and thanks for being the first in line.” Others were just happy to get their hands on the coveted seats.
