The Lion King musical arrives at Century II Convention Center on Tuesday September 04, 2012 for a four-week, 32-show run. Lion King in Wichita, Kansas run through September 30, 2012.

The Wichita show is special, says production stage manager Ken Davis, because “The Lion King” has never played here before. By contrast, the recent run in St. Louis was the company’s third.

“Wichita is a debut, so you can’t rest on your laurels,” Davis said.

The story of “The Lion King” focuses on Simba, the mischievous lion cub of Mufasa, king of the savanna. Simba is to inherit the throne from his father someday, but Mufasa’s jealous brother, Scar, has other plans. He enlists a band of hyenas to help him get both Mufasa and Simba out of his way. As Simba grows, he finds the strength to fight back against his evil uncle, aided by his love interest/childhood friend Nala, wise baboon Rafiki, protective red-billed hornbill Zazu, big-hearted warthog Pumbaa and wisecracking meerkat Timon.

Kansans lined up six hours before the box office opened to get tickets to The Lion King. Close to 800 Kansans got their pick of seats during a two-hour sale only at the Wichita-tix Box Office Saturday morning. Organizers say the turnout was better than expected with a line that wrapped around the building. The Wichita Theater League says they’re looking forward to having the award-winning musical right here in town.

“That first number, The Circle of Life when the animals all come in, it will absolutely bring tears to your eyes,” said Amy Hamm with the Wichita Theater League. “It brought tears to my eyes, it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen on stage.”

The Lion King Musical coming to Wichita for a four week limited engagement, The performances at Century II Convention Center start with the 7:30 PM show on September 4, 2012 and continue through Sunday September 30, 201.

Officials announced in February 2011 that Theater League — the organization that brought 2009’s run of “Wicked” to Wichita for a three-week run — would be bringing “Lion King” to town for a similar extended run. “Wicked” offered Wichita audiences 24 performances. “Lion King” has 32 scheduled, said Bethany Nesbitt, Theater League’s marketing/communications account manager.

On May 5, individual tickets will go on sale at 8 a.m. in what will be a party atmosphere of radio-station DJs, giveaways and breakfast at Century II. Creating a buzz around the sale of individual tickets on May 5 at Century II will be radio remotes by DJs from Clear Channel radio stations B-98 FM, Kissin’ 102.1-FM and Channel 963 from 7 to 11 a.m. The first person in line will receive an autographed copy of “How Does the Show Go On?” by “Lion King” producer Thomas Schumacher. The first 100 ticket-buyers will receive a “Lion King” CD. While supplies last, other ticket-buyers on the scene will receive a “Lion King” T-shirt (one per order).

The Disney production of “The Lion King” — known for its elaborate costuming and lively music — has played in more than 70 cities in North America and been seen by more than 13.9 million people. The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the 1994 animated film — including the beloved songs “The Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” — along with three new songs by them and other music that fuses Western popular music with the sounds and rhythms of Africa.
