Directed by Tony winner Julie Taymor, The Lion King is a musical based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice along with the musical score created by Hans Zimmer with choral arrangements by Lebo M. The musical features actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. The show is produced by Disney Theatrical.

The musical debuted July 8, 1997, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre, and was an instant success before premiering on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater on October 15, 1997 in previews with the official opening on November 13, 1997. On June 13, 2006, the Broadway production moved to the Minskoff Theatre to make way for the musical version of Mary Poppins, where it is still running after more than 5,350 performances. The show debuted in the West End’s Lyceum Theatre on October 19, 1999 and is still running. The cast of the West End production were invited to perform at the Royal Variety Performance 2008 at the London Palladium on December 11, in the presence of senior members of the British Royal Family.

13 new cast members have joined Disney’s The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre.

Liverpudlian actress Ava Brennan makes her West End debut as ‘Nala,’ having recently played this principal role in the Hamburg production. Damian Baldet , who has worked at La Jolla Playhouse, Soho rep and the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, comes fresh from the Las Vegas production to play the role of ‘Timon’. Jacquelyn Hodges joins having also performed in the Las Vegas production and in the North American tour, to play the role of ‘Shenzi’. In addition, Sebastien Torkia will play the role of ‘Ed’. Previous West End credits include Saturday Night Fever, A Streetcar Named Desire, La Cage Aux Folles and Guys and Dolls.

New ensemble performers: Curtis Lee Scott, Cleveland Cathnott, Francisco Lins, Wade Lewin, Darcel Frederik, Aisha Jawando, Momo Yeung, Jose Alves and Jamie Golding who will contribute to the international company which already includes performers from 16 countries around the world: UK, Canada, USA, South Africa, Jamaica, Japan, Germany, Holland, France, Mexico, Australia, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Singapore and Korea.

Originally from Bootle in Liverpool, Ava trained at the Loretta Legge Theatre School in Maghull, Merseyside where she gained extensive training in ballet, modern dance and tap.

She then went on to achieve roles in various European productions of Oklahoma! Aida, The Count of Monte Cristo and Hairspray.

Ava Brennan said: “When I first got offered the job to play Nala in the London production, I was ecstatic. It has been a dream of mine to perform on the West End since I was little, I still cannot believe it now! I am so excited to get on stage and be part of the Lion King family.”

Now in its twelfth year at the Lyceum Theatre, The Lion King continues to reign as one of London’s most popular musicals. Over 9 million people have seen the show since it opened in London in October 1999 and 55 million people have seen The Lion King worldwide. With record-breaking productions in New York, Las Vegas, Singapore, Hamburg and Tokyo, this global phenomenon also on North American tour is set to launch in Madrid in October 2011.

Disney’s The Lion King has increased its booking period by 3 months – tickets are now on sale to 2 Oct 2011 at the Lyceum Theatre. The success enjoyed by The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre in the West End has led to the booking period being extended by three months.

According to London Theatre, more than nine million people have now seen the production, which is based on the Disney film of the same name.

It tells the story of young lion cub Simba, When the young lion prince Simba is born his evil uncle Scar is pushed back to second in line to the throne. Scar plots to kill both Simba and his father, King Mufasa, and proclaim himself king. Simba survives but is led to believe that his father died because of him and he decides to flee the kingdom.

The Lion King, which recently celebrated its 11th anniversary, boasts tunes by widely-acclaimed songwriters including Elton John, Tim Rice and Hans Zimmer.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the theatre production earned more than £34 million in 2010, which means it has set a new West End record for the second year in a row.

The cast and crew behind The Lion King are celebrating this month after notching up 11 years in the London West End.

It remains one of the most popular London musicals and is now the ninth longest-running in West End history, having been seen by an amazing 8.5 million people, Broadway World reports.

There have now been more than 4,600 performances at the Lyceum Theatre.

The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a cub who is heir to Pride Rock. However, his world is turned upside down when his father King Mufasa is killed and his evil uncle Scar leads him to believe he was responsible.

Simba runs away and grows up, but later finds that Pride Rock has been ravaged by Scar and his hyenas – will he go back and seek his rightful place as king?
