Disney’s “The Lion King” Will Return to the Orpheum Theater March 12, 2013
Omaha Performing Arts has announces the season for 2012-13 – Includes Disney’s “The Lion King”. The popular family musical, which had a record run here in 2007, headlines OPA’s Broadway season for 2012-13. Lion King musical will return to the Orpheum Theater for a four-week run from March 12, 2013 to Sunday, April 7, 2013.
The Lion King broke box office records when it first came to Omaha in 2007. “The Lion King” is a universal tale with a Disney treatment. A jealous uncle tricks a young cub into believing he’s killed his father. The cub flees into exile, abandoning his identity as the future king. Meanwhile, the uncle temporarily conquers the Pride Lands, ravaging the land in the process. Ultimately, the cub finds his rightful place.
Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, this blockbuster opened on Broadway in October 1997 and is still playing. It set records in Omaha in early 2007 during a four-week run. Music is by Elton John, with lyrics by Tim Rice. The show won six Tonys, including best musical.
