PostHeaderIcon The Lion King Celebrates Record-Breaking Sold-Out Premiere Engagement in Montreal

Disney’s The Lion King continues to reign across North America with a record-breaking sold-out four-week premiere engagement in Montreal which concluded on Sunday, September 4. The engagement grossed over $7 million at the box office and entertained more than 85,000 patrons during 32 performances at the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, making it the highest-grossing theatrical production in the venue’s history.

It is estimated that The Lion King generated a $24 million economic benefit to Montreal from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff. This figure is based upon a report from the Touring Broadway League, the official trade organization for Broadway and their North American Tours. The report states that on average, Broadway tours contribute to the local metropolitan area’s economy an economic impact 3.5 times the gross ticket sales.

“evenko is extremely proud to be part of The Lion King’s success in Montreal. We are delighted to have brought this internationally renowned Broadway musical to Montrealers” said Jacques Aubé, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of evenko. “The success of The Lion King had a substantial impact on Montreal’s economy and community and made Broadway accessible for Montrealers and tourists in the city this summer. Working with Disney was a wonderful experience and we hope to do it again in the near future.”

“The Lion King has been celebrating successful engagements throughout Canada this summer and we are especially proud of our record-breaking run in Montreal,” said Jack Eldon, Vice President, Domestic, Disney Theatrical Productions. “We are overwhelmed by the enduring response to the show and thank the city of Montreal for an incredible engagement.”

This North American National Tour has been seen by nearly 13 million theatergoers and grossed over $834 million to date. Enjoying its ninth year on the road, The Lion King continues to celebrate unparalleled achievements and delight new audiences throughout North America – The Lion King Tour Cities 2011 and 2012.

PostHeaderIcon Garth Fagan, Lion King Musical choreographer – Interview

Fourteen years after choreographing “The Lion King,” Fagan still delights in talking about the stage musical, a melding of song, dance, story, masks and puppetry.

Garth Fagan - Choreographer Lion King Broadway Musical

Fagan won a Tony award in 1998 for choreography. The choreographer and founder of Garth Fagan Dance attended a March performance of a touring production of “The Lion King” in Rochester, where his professional troupe is based.

The Lion King musical comes to Syracuse, NY on Tuesday, September 06, 2011 for a four-week run. It premiered on Broadway in November 1997 and continues to play there.

Based on the 1994 Disney movie, “The Lion King” tells the story of lion cub Simba, heir to his father Mufasa’s throne as ruler of the animal kingdom. Simba is remorseful believing he is to blame for his father’s death, which unbeknownst to him had been engineered by his evil uncle Scar. Guilt drives the lion cub to run away.

“The Lion King” still affects the 71-year-old Fagan in unexpected ways.

“I still bawl like a baby at the first number,” he says referring to “Circle of Life.”

“I know every step, every sound, where everyone’s going to be.

I’m checking it out to make sure things are just right. I still cry; it brings back some sort of childhood stuff that I thought I had buried.”

Memories of his daughter, who died at 3 years old in a car accident, influenced the creation of his dances.

“I never liked cats. I’m a dog person,” he says with a tinge of his Jamaican accent surfacing. But Fagan’s daughter, Sherrin, was a cat lover.

Working on a production where the big cats rule, “I had to learn how to get some respect for that,” he says with a laugh that rumbles forth.

“You use negatives to become a positive,” he says of the tragic circumstances.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King Sells $5.3 Million in Tickets

Lion King Broadway musical tour sold $5.3 million in tickets and attracted nearly 70,000 people to 32 performances, Ken Neufeld, president and chief executive of the Victoria Theatre Association said Wednesday. The “Lion King’s” local economic impact was $15 million to $18 million, Neufeld said.

The four-week run of Disney’s “The Lion King” that ended Sunday at the Schuster Performing Arts Center “exceeded our expectations in every area,” he said.

On average, Broadway tours generate an economic impact of 3.5 times the gross ticket sales to a local metropolitan area’s economy, according to the Broadway League, a national trade association.

“Restaurants were full, parking garages were doing well, the bars were full after the shows,” Neufeld said. “It was fantastic.”

Uno’s Chicago Grill on North Main Street saw nearly 10,000 customers during “The Lion King’s” engagement, doubling its typical summer business, said Joe Kiley, general manager. “We would have done about 4,500 to 5,000 normally,” he said.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King Puppet Supervisor Michael Reilly makes Lion King Animals Magic

It takes a stampede of dedicated cast and crew members to make the 230 puppets in The Lion King come to life. The play, which stomped back to Toronto on April 19 for the first time since its four-year stay in the city ended in 2004, requires actors to train with their intricate animal puppets for months.

Lion King Puppet Supervisor – Toronto-raised Michael Reilly oversees the roughly 230 puppets in the acclaimed stage production, which made a triumphant return to Toronto, ON last week.

Lion King Puppet Supervisor Michael Reilly

“Every puppet has, you know, 50 parts to it,” says Michael Reilly, the show’s puppet supervisor. He works with two assistants to paint, fix and rebuild every puppet and mask that goes onstage in this musical adaptation of Disney’s hit 1994 film. “We have to be a jack of all trades,” says the native Torontonian, who deals with artistic, structural and electronic elements and has been involved with the production for nine years.

Whether they’re tiny repairs or enormous ones, Reilly ensures every puppet is ready to hit the stage. “Zazu, our bird, has tiny, tiny little controls inside of his head because he has a lot of moving parts, and I don’t have very small hands so it’s very difficult for me to get in there,” Reilly says.

In one of the biggest repairs he’s ever done, Reilly “once had to put an elephant on my back and hold it up while I fixed its front legs.” Four actors usually carry the 120-pound puppet pachyderm, whose backstage name is Bertha.

Although most of the delicate puppets are lightweight, using them requires all kinds of physical training.

PostHeaderIcon Impact of ‘Lion King’ estimated at $10 million on the Rochester, NY

The four-week run of “The Lion King” had an estimated $10 million impact on the Rochester area, the New York City-based trade organization the Broadway League estimated.

The production, presented by the Rochester Broadway Theatre League, drew more than 70,000 patrons throughout its four-week run. The cast and crew alone filled 2,800 room nights at local hotels and the show employed more than 70 local union workers each night throughout the 32 performances, RBTL officials said.

“We are pleased to have been able to bring this incredible production back to Rochester,” said Donald Jeffries, RBTL president and CEO.

The cast of the production had an impact beyond the stage, RBTL officials said. Case members participated in acting and technical master classes and the RBTL designed curriculum for middle school students based on the play.
