PostHeaderIcon The Lion King Grossed Over $4.3 Million in Wichita KS

Disney’s “The Lion King” which concluded Sunday at Century II Convention Center in Wichita KS grossed over $4.3 million at the box office and entertained more than 60,000 patrons, making it the highest-grossing theatrical production in Wichita history.

It’s estimated that the show brought $15 million into the Wichita economy, based on hotels, restaurants, parking etc., utilized by both patrons and the production staff. Theatre League based the figure on a Touring Broadway League report that found that, on average, Broadway tours contribute an economic impact 3.5 times the gross ticket sales.

The run, which concluded on Sunday, started on Sept. 4 at Century II’s Concert Hall. More than 60,000 people saw the show, Disney said in a news release. From here The Lion King musical moves to Albuquerque NM playing through October 28, 2012.

McConaughey co-stars in the highly anticipated male stripper movie Magic Mike, which opens this weekend. His many additional film credits include The Lincoln Lawyer, A Time to Kill, and U-571.

The show has grossed more than $5.5 million in ticket sales, according to officials with Broadway in Richmond. The four-week run of Disney’s The Lion King has broken the Landmark Theater box office record for a Broadway engagement. When the show ends this Sunday, it will have grossed over $5.5 million and performed for over 93,000 people. In comparison, the three-week run of the Broadway hit “Wicked” at the Landmark in 2010 brought in about $4.8 million.

Organizers estimate that the show has produced a $19.5 million economic impact on the Richmond region. including hotels, restaurants, parking, and businesses patronized by audience members and production staff.

“We are so proud to share the experience of this groundbreaking production with audiences in Richmond, and to entertain so many first-time and regular theatergoers,” said Jack Eldon, Vice President, Domestic, Disney Theatrical Productions in a statement. “We are overwhelmed by the enduring response to the show and thank all of Central Virginia for an incredible engagement.”

“The Lion King brought us incredibly talented creative artists and actors, and a team that worked hard to maintain the highest theatrical standards,” says Steve Traxler, President, Chicago-based Jam Theatricals, the presenting company for Broadway In Richmond, “and the patrons and our loyal Broadway In Richmond subscribers showed their thanks by supporting this blockbuster engagement and making it a success.”

The Lion King, seventh longest-running musical in Broadway history won six 1998 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Costume Design, and Best Choreography.

PostHeaderIcon Lion King to Go on UK Tour

One of London’s best-loved musicals will embark on its first ever UK tour. The Lion King has been seen in London by 10 million people during its run at the Lyceum Theatre in London.

For the first time audiences outside the capital will be able to see the show, which uses a mixture of puppets and actors to tell the story of the Disney film released in 1994.

The production will open at the Bristol Hippodrome on August 31 for eleven weeks. It will then go on tour to the Palace Theatre in Manchester and will visit 10 cities in the UK and Ireland over two and a half years. The tour has been four years in the planning.

The musical first opened in 1999 in the West End, where it has continued to attract audiences. 2011 was its best financial year so far with the production breaking the industry record for the highest annual gross box office in West End history.

Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical Productions said: “We continue to be thrilled by how UK audiences have enjoyed The Lion King in London, and have long wished to also share this production with audiences nationally.”
