The 1997 musical was based on the Disney film, adapted and directed by Julie Taymor, with music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi. It earned 11 Tony Awards when it came out, establishing Taymor as the first woman to receive the award for the best direction of a musical.
