Matthew McConaughey with Family Watch Lion King at Minskoff Theatre in NYC
Film star Matthew McConaughey took his family to see the Broadway production of The Lion King, at the Minskoff Theatre, on Thursday, June 28. Afterwards, he met up with cast members including Alton Fitzgerald White, who plays Mufasa, and Adam Jacobs, who stars as Simba.
McConaughey co-stars in the highly anticipated male stripper movie Magic Mike, which opens this weekend. His many additional film credits include The Lincoln Lawyer, A Time to Kill, and U-571.

Lion King Broadway Musical grossed $1,847,364 and had a 100.1% attendance rate, about 0.1% more than the previous week. The 35 shows on the boards grossed $24,964,889, improving around 7.51% from the previous week’s totals.

Syndee Winters Joining Lion King Broadway as Royal Lioness Nala
Syndee Winters will join the Lion King Broadway as Nala, beginning performances Friday, June 1. Syndee Winters will make her Broadway debut in Disney’s Tony-winning musical The Lion King from tomorrow. Winters, not new to the Lion King – has played the role on tour and currently in Miami, FL. She will take over for current star Chauntee Schuler. Winters will continue with the production through August 26.

Lion King musical is all about the noble lion king Mufasa sacrifices his own life to save his headstrong young son Simba. Mufasa’s evil brother Scar commits fratricide and rules over a dying kingdom. Young love blossoms when Simba reencounters his boyhood friend Nala, then finds the brave purpose that would make his late father proud. Lion King Enters Broadway Record – Highest Grossing Show of All Time
Box office revenues show that “The Lion King” has recently swiped the title of Broadway’s all-time highest grossing show from “The Phantom of the Opera.” Box office figures released Monday show that “The Lion King” last week enters Broadway’s record of all-time highest grossing show despite having run for a decade less.
The Disney show opened in November 1997, and after taking more than $2m at the box office during Easter week, Lion King’s cumulative gross earnings hit $853.8m. By comparison, The Phantom of the Opera, which opened in January 1988, added $1.2m to its cumulative gross, which now stands at $853.1m.
The upstart’s victory is due in large part to its higher average ticket prices and a slightly larger theater. Monday’s data shows “Phantom” had an average paid admission of $98.97, while “The Lion King” fetched $155.09.
Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions, also gave credit to Julie Taymor, the director, costume and mask maker of “The Lion King.” ”Her vision, continued commitment to the show and uncommon artistry account for this extraordinary success,” he said in a statement.
In comparison, “The Lion King” looks like a pup: It is the sixth longest-running show on Broadway with over 5,900 performances over 14 years and has sold just over 10 million tickets.
“It doesn’t surprise me,” said Cary Ginell, a music historian and biographer who edited the seventh edition of “Broadway Musicals: Show By Show.” He compares “The Lion King” to a Disneyland ride.
Ginell tips his cap to the new box office king and doesn’t see a time soon when it abandons its kingdom. “‘Lion King’ is the perfect family musical and I think it always will be as long as expenses don’t go so far up that they won’t be able to afford to put it on anymore.”

Disney’s smash hit musical The Lion King will become the sixth longest-running Broadway show in history on March 14. The company will celebrate the milestone after the matinee performance at the Minskoff Theatre, when it will have played 5,960 performances.

Disney’s The Lion King Celebrates 14 Years on Broadway
The Tony Award-winning Disney musical The Lion King celebrates 14 years on Broadway Nov. 13 at the Minskoff Theatre, 200 West 45thStreet, NYC.
As it enters its 15th year, The Lion King remains ascendant, continuing to reign as a cultural phenomenon and one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Since its Broadway premiere on Nov. 13, 1997, 19 global productions have been seen by more than 63 million people, and grossed over $4.7 billion to date.
Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), The Lion King is the seventh longest-running musical in Broadway history and one of only six productions in theatre history to play for ten years or more both on Broadway and in the West End.
The Broadway company of The Lion King currently includes Gareth Saxe as Scar, Alton Fitzgerald White as Mufasa and Tshidi Manye as Rafiki.
The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from “The Lion King” animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer.
The book was adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed “The Lion King” animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay. Clifton Oliver As Simba in Lion King’s Broadway’s Minskoff Theater
Disney Theatrical Productions: The Lion King Welcomes Clifton Oliver As Simba to Broadway’s Minskoff Theater. Clifton Oliver took over the role as Simba starting from Friday, May 13. Dashaun Young, who played his final Broadway performance on Saturday, May 7 as Simba, will reprise the role with the Las Vegas company on Monday, June 20. Oliver originated the role of Simba in the Las Vegas production at Mandalay Bay (2009) and the Los Angeles production at the Pantages Theater (2000) and performed as Simba on the first national tour.

Clifton Oliver also starred on Broadway as Benny (opposite Jordin Sparks) in In the Heights and as Fiyero in Wicked and appeared in the Los Angeles company of Ragtime. Judah Bellamy and Shaylin Becton Join The Lion King Broadway Cast
Produced by Thomas Schumacher of Disney Theatrical Productions, The Lion King is currently playing at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre (200 West 45th Street). Broadway’s landmark musical event The Lion King is pleased to welcome Judah Bellamy as “Young Simba” and Shaylin Becton as “Young Nala” to the company. Bellamy and Becton made their Broadway debuts last night. They alternate with fellow young lions and current cast members Alphonso Romero Jones II (Young Simba) and Khail Toi Bryant (Young Nala).
Bellamy and Becton began performances on March 29 at the Minskoff Theatre. The Lion King marks the Broadway debut for both performers.
Judah Bellamy, 11, is a Baltimore native and has performed with Johns Hopkins’ Unified Voices Choir and starred in The Wiz and A Raisin in the Sun at the Cahill Theatrical Arts Center in Maryland.
