The Lion King Musical Top-Grossing Broadway Show Of 2013
The Lion King musical on Broadway earned the top spot with $97 million since the beginning of the year, bringing its total income to just over $1 billion.
The show, which features music by Elton John and Tim Rice, opened on Broadway in 1997 and has been housed at the Minskoff Theater since 2006. It is an adaptation of the beloved Disney film of the same name and features characters in extravagant costumes to represent the animal characters in the film.
The show easily beat out the second place contender “Book of Mormon,” which earned $90.4 million since the start of 2013. “The Lion King” also broke a sales record for the Minskoff Theater in the second to last week of 2013, selling over $2.8 million in tickets.
